What is Digital Waste Tracking?

Digital Waste Tracking is the UK government's move to replace paper waste transfer notes and movement records with a central digital service. From 1 October 2026, permitted or licensed sites in England and Wales will need to report their waste digitally, using the report receipt of waste service. In Northern Ireland and Scotland, the requirement starts on 1 January 2027.

The service is being developed by DEFRA and the Environment Agency to improve traceability, reduce illegal waste activity, and give operators and regulators a clearer view of waste movements across the UK.

The receiving site reports receipt of waste; the producer and carrier are responsible for accurate movement records and waste transfer notes. Carriers also need records that show who moved the waste, when and where.
